"Asesor y acusado / Counsel and Accused", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 65,1 x 81,3 cm., 1931.

"Ensueños / Daydreams", óleo sobre panel / oil on panel, 71 x 89 cm. Invaluable

"Jarrón de flores / Vase of Flowers", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 72,1 x 53,6 cm.

"Automedon con los caballos de Aquiles / Automedon with the Horses of Achilles"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 315 × 329 cm., 1868. Wikimedia Commons

On October 21 is the birthday of

Heinrich Maria Davringhausen, German painter born in 1894 in Aachen, associated with the New Objectivity.
Mostly self-taught as a painter, he began as a sculptor, studying briefly at the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts before participating in a group exhibition at Alfred Flechtheim's gallery in 1914. He also traveled to Ascona with his friend the painter Carlo Mense that year. At this early stage his paintings were influenced by the expressionists, especially August Macke.
Exempted from military service in World War I, he lived in Berlin from 1915 to 1918, forming friendships with George Grosz and John Heartfield. In 1919 he had a solo exhibition at Hans Goltz' Galerie Neue Kunst in Munich, and exhibited in the first "Young Rhineland" exhibition in Düsseldorf. Davringhausen became a member of the "Novembergruppe" and gained some prominence among the artists representing a new tendency in German art of the postwar period. He was asked to take part in the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) exhibition in Mannheim which brought together many leading "post-expressionist" artists, including Grosz, Otto Dix, Max Beckmann, Alexander Kanoldt and Georg Schrimpf.
Davringhausen went into exile with the fall of the Weimar republic in 1933, first going to Majorca, then to France. In Germany approximately 200 of his works were removed from public museums by the Nazis on the grounds that they were degenerate art. Prohibited from exhibiting, Davringhausen was interned in Cagnes-sur-Mer but fled to Côte D' Azur. In 1945 however he returned to Cagnes-sur-Mer, a suburb of Nice, where he remained for the rest of his life. He worked as an abstract painter under the name Henri Davring until his death in Nice in 1970.
Perhaps the best-known work from Davringhausen's New Objectivity period is Der Schieber (The Profiteer). Painted in acidulous colors, it depicts a glowering businessman seated at a desk in a modern office suite. Although Davringhausen rarely presented social criticism in his work, in Der Schieber "the artist created the classic pictorial symbol of the period of inflation that was commencing".
He died in 1970.

On October 22 is the birthday of

Dieter Morales Weidenbach, German painter and graphic artist born in 1945 in Stendal.
Dieter M. Weidenbach grew up in the first years of his life on the edge of the city of Stendal, which had been spared from the war. In 1951, his father was released from captivity, and the family returned to the ancestral hometown of Weißenfels. A year later his father died. As a student Weidenbach was a competitive athlete, but had to give up this career due to a sports equipment accident. He turned his interest since then mainly on the art.
He attended the secondary school, graduated in 1964, and began studying history and art history at the Karl Marx University Leipzig. In 1966 he was exmatriculated there, worked during the summer as a laborer and began in September with the study of graphics, painting and book illustration at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig. He spent the winter semester 1968/1969 as a participant in a study exchange program at the Polygraphic Institute in Moscow. After the birth of their daughter Claudia (* 1969) he married the painter Helga Melges in 1970. In 1971 he graduated with a diploma as a painter and graphic artist and worked from then on as a freelance artist in Weissenfels.
A first highlight of his travels was a study trip to Egypt in 1974. In 1979 he went of France in a study trip.
In 1980, his wife Helga did not return from a trip to Austria. In the years 1980-1982 Weidenbach held a teaching assignment at the Burg Giebichenstein University of Applied Sciences in Halle. After completing this teaching he chose Weimar as a new place of business and moved with his daughter to Thuringia. Three years later, his application for permanent departure from the GDR was approved, so that Weidenbach 1985 left the former GDR and moved with daughter Claudia to West Berlin to the immediate inner German border. Now able to travel without restrictions, Weidenbach spent a long time in Italy in 1986 and in 1988 in southern France.
After German reunification, Weidenbach moved back to Weimar in 1993, where the artist still lives today. In 2000 he received a teaching assignment at the University of Applied Sciences Erfurt.

On October 23 is the birthday of

Jean-Louis Forain, French Impressionist painter, lithographer, watercolorist and etcher born in 1852 in Reims, Marne.
At age eight, his family moved to Paris. He began his career working as a caricaturist for several Paris journals including Le Monde Parisien and Le rire satirique. Wanting to expand his horizons, he enrolled at the École des Beaux Arts, studying under Jean-Léon Gérôme as well as another sculptor/painter, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux.
A follower and protégé of Degas, Forain joined the Impressionist circle in time to take part in the fourth independent exhibition in 1879; he participated in three of the four landmark shows that followed between 1879 and 1884. Influenced by Impressionist theories on light and color, he preferred to depict scenes of everyday life: his watercolors, pastels, and paintings focused on Parisian popular entertainments and themes of modernity.
Aside from being influenced by his friend of over fifty years, Edgar Degas, Forain was greatly influenced by Honoré Daumier; and his treatment of subjects in his drawings for publications such as Le Figaro and Le Courrier Francais are often reminiscent of Daumier's. In 1892 he published the first volume of La Comédie Parisienne, a collection of Forain's illustrations and commentary on the major political stories that disrupted France’s Third Republic—such as the anarchic crisis and the Dreyfus affair.
During the first World War, Forain's illustrations honored the patriotism of his contemporaries; and he enlisted in the Section de Camouflage under Lucien-Victor Guirand de Scévola. In his later years, Forain created numerous scenes of the Law Courts and other Parisian institutions plus social satire caricatures on late 19th and early 20th century French life. In 1931, shortly before his death, he was made a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in London. He was one of France's best known and revered artists during his time and may best be remembered for his numerous drawings chronicling and commenting on Parisian city life at the end of the 19th century. Followers and admirers of Forain's work include Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
He died in 1931.

On October 24 is the birthday of

István Orosz, Hungarian painter, printmaker, graphic designer and animated film director born in 1951 in Kecskemét.
He is known for his mathematically inspired works, impossible objects, optical illusions, double-meaning images and anamorphoses. The geometric art of István Orosz, with forced perspectives and optical illusions, has been compared to works by M. C. Escher.
He studied at the Hungarian University of Arts and Design (now Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design) in Budapest as pupil of István Balogh and Ernő Rubik. After graduating in 1975 he began to deal with theatre as stage designer and animated film as animator and film director. He likes to use visual paradox, double meaning images and illusionistic approaches while following traditional printing techniques such as woodcutting and etching. He also tries to renew the technique of anamorphosis. He is a regular participant in the major international biennials of posters and graphic art and his works has been shown in individual and group exhibitions in Hungary and abroad. Film director at the PannóniaFilm Studio in Budapest. professor at University of West Hungary in Sopron, co-founder of Hungarian Poster Association, member of Alliance Graphique International (AGI) and Hungarian Art Academie. On October 25 is the birthday of

Grigorij Efimovic Glikman (Рыгор Яфімавіч Глюкман), known as Grigory Gluckmann or Grégory Gluckman, painter and lithographer born in Vitebsk, Belarus.
At age 19 he enrolled in the First State School of Free Arts (later called MVZHSD, Moscow School of Painting). In 1920 he went to Berlin, and in 1922 he joined the artistic group "Spindle". In 1924 he went to Florence where for 9 months he created a lot of paintings. Then he settled in Paris.
During the 1920s he worked mainly in the field of book graphics. He illustrated and designed books for the publishing house "La Pleiade". In 1924 he held his first solo exhibition at the Druet Gallery in Paris. Since 1925 he showed his work at the Paris Salon, the Salon des Tuileries, the Autumn Salon, the Salon of Independent Artists and exhibitions at the National Society of Fine Arts. In 1930 he turned to easel painting.
The main themes of his work were the Parisian street scenes, sensual nudes and the city's nightlife. The artist gave continuity to the technique he had learned during his Muscovite training: work on a board applying several layers of paint, one after drying the other, which allowed him to achieve vivid and suggestive glazes.
In Paris he met and befriended the famous violinist Jascha Heifetz, who would accumulate the greatest collection of works by the painter.
At the beginning of the Second World War he moved to the United States, living in Los Angeles and New York. Between 1940 and 1957 he held individual exhibitions regularly. In 1945 he received the F. Bleer Prize from the Art Institute of Chicago.
He died in 1973.

On October 26 is the birthday of

Elizabeth Nourse, American realist-style genre, portrait, and landscape painter born in Mt. Healthy, Ohio, in the Cincinnati area. She also worked in decorative painting and sculpture.
She attended the McMicken School of Design in Cincinnati (now the Art Academy of the Cincinnati Art Museum) at age fifteen, and was one of the first women admitted to the women's life class offered there taught by Thomas Satterwhite Noble. She also studied watercolor painting while there. She studied at the school for seven years and was even offered a teaching position, which she declined in order to focus on her painting. In 1887, she moved to Paris, France along with her older sister, Louise. There, she attended Académie Julian, studying under Gustave Boulanger and Jules Lefebvre.
Described by her contemporaries as "the first woman painter of America" and "the dean of American woman painters in France and one of the most eminent contemporary artists of her sex," Nourse was the first American woman to be voted into the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. She also had the honor of having one of her paintings purchased by the French government and included in the Luxembourg Museum's permanent collection. Nourse's style was described by Los Angeles critic Henry J. Seldis as a "forerunner of social realist painting."
During the first world war, Nourse defied the tendency of most American emigres to return home and remained in Paris, where she worked to assist the war's refugees and solicited donations from her friends in the United States and Canada for the benefit of people whose lives were disrupted by the war.
She died in 1938.

On October 27 is the birthday of

Mary Moser, English painter born in 1744 in London, and one of the most celebrated British women artists of 18th-century.
One of only two female founding members of the Royal Academy in 1768, Moser painted portraits but is particularly noted for her depictions of flowers.
She was trained by her Swiss-born artist and enameller father George Michael Moser (1706-1783) and her talents were evident at an early age: she won her first Society of Arts medal at 14, and regularly exhibited flower pieces, and occasional history paintings, at the Society of Artists of Great Britain. Ten years later, however, her thirst for professional recognition led her to join with 35 other artists (including her father) in forming the Royal Academy, and, with Angelica Kauffman, she took an active role in proceedings.
In the 1790s, Moser received a prestigious commission, for which she was paid over £900, from Queen Charlotte to complete a floral decorative scheme for a room in Frogmore House in Windsor, Berkshire. This was to prove one of her last professional works; following marriage to a Captain Hugh Lloyd on 23 October 1793, she retired and began exhibiting as an amateur under her married name. She continued showing at the Royal Academy until 1802.
At this period Moser had an open affair with Richard Cosway, who was then separated from his wife Maria. She travelled with him for six months on a sketching tour in 1793.She died in 1819.

On October 28 is the birthday of

Miguel E. Dávila, Argentine painter and fine artist born in 1926 in Chilecito, La Rioja.
He began his academic training at the Higher Institute of Plastic Arts of the National University of Tucumán, 1948 - 1952, under the direction of masters Lino Enea Spilimbergo (painting), Pompeyo Audivert (engraving) and Lajos Szalay (drawing).
In 1952 he moved to Buenos Aires where he began his career as a fine artist. In 1958 the Municipality of the city of La Rioja summoned him as the first director of the Municipal Museum of Fine Arts, today Octavio de la Colina Museum, a position he held until 1960.
In 1961 he obtained the scholarship of the National Fund of the Arts, in the specialty of painting. He traveled to Paris with Rómulo Macció, Ernesto Deira, Luis Felipe Noé and Jorge de la Vega, sharing a workshop with Ernesto Deira. He adhered to the movement of Neo-Figuration.
In 1963 he returned to Buenos Aires to settle permanently.
In 1964 he won the Manuel Belgrano Municipal Hall Award. He began to teach classes until 1995, making exhibitions in the galleries Van Riel, Art Gallery International, Wildestein, Rubers.
Between 1977 and 1982 he alternated his residence between Madrid and Buenos Aires.
In 1981 he won the Grand Prize of Honor of the National Painting Salon.
He died in 2009.

On October 29 is the birthday of

Jill Adams, South African artist born in 1932 in Durban, who specialised in natural history illustrations.
He lived for part of her life in Kimberley, where, on the staff of the McGregor Museum, she worked from 1974 to 1983 in the art department, in close association with leading biologist, Dr Richard Liversidge.
During this period she published her illustrated Flowering Plants of the Northern Cape (1976). She subsequently achieved public renown for her paintings of Aloes.
Adams subsequently collaborated with ornithologist Richard Liversidge making their book, The birds around us: birds of the Southern African region (1990). Liversidge points out in a note "To the reader" that "this is certainly the first book on Southern African birds which has attempted to illustrate all the more common species in flight. Often a bird in flight is all that you will see."
The illustrations produced for The birds around us have been described as "the product of her outstanding draughtsmanship, coupled with a keen sense of observation and knowledge of the 'natural pose' of birds." In order to keep the collection in the Northern Cape, the original paintings were purchased by the Gant family and donated to the McGregor Museum in 1991.
Earlier, in 1983, Adams was commissioned by Heritage Porcelain to contribute to a series of six plates in a Collectors' edition, Best loved birds of Southern Africa to mark the centenary of the birth of Austin Roberts, South African ornithologist (1883–1948).
Jill died in 2016.

On October 30 is the birthday of

Maria Anna Angelika Kauffmann, usually known in English as Angelica Kauffman, Swiss Neoclassical painter born in 1741 in Chur in Graubünden.
She had a successful career in London and Rome. Remembered primarily as a history painter, Kauffmann was a skilled portraitist, landscape and decoration painter. She was one of the two female founding members of the Royal Academy in London in 1768.
Her father, Joseph Johann Kauffmann, was a relatively poor man but a skilled Austrian muralist and painter, who was often traveling for his work. He trained Angelica and she worked as his assistant, moving through Switzerland, Austria, and Italy.
In 1754, her mother died and her father decided to move to Milan. Later visits to Italy of long duration followed. She became a member of the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze in 1762. In 1763 she visited Rome, returning again in 1764. From Rome she passed to Bologna and Venice, everywhere feted for her talents and charm. In 1765, her work appeared in England in an exhibition of the Free Society of Artists. She moved to England shortly after and established herself as a leading artist.
From 1769 until 1782 Kauffman was an annual exhibitor with the Royal Academy, sending sometimes as many as seven pictures, generally on classical or allegoric subjects.
While Kauffman produced many types of art, she identified herself primarily as a history painter, an unusual designation for a woman artist in the 18th century. History painting was considered the most elite and lucrative category in academic painting during this time period and, under the direction of Sir Joshua Reynolds, the Royal Academy made a strong effort to promote it to a native audience more interested in commissioning and buying portraits and landscapes. Despite the popularity that Kauffman enjoyed in British society, and her success there as an artist, she was disappointed by the relative apathy of the British towards history painting. Ultimately she left Britain for the continent, where history painting was better established, held in higher esteem and patronized.
She died in 1807.

On October 31 is the birthday of

Alexandre-Georges-Henri Regnault, French painter born in 1843 in París. He was the son of Henri Victor Regnault.
On leaving school he successively entered the studios of Antoine Montfort, Louis Lamothe and Alexandre Cabanel, was beaten for the Prix de Rome (1863) by Joseph Layraud and Xaiver Monchablon, and in 1864 exhibited two portraits in no way remarkable at the Paris Salon. In 1866, however, he carried off the Prix de Rome with a work of unusual force and distinction Thetis bringing the Arms forged by Vulcan to Achilles (School of the Fine Arts).
The past in Italy did not touch him, but his illustrations to Wey's Rome show how observant he was of actual life and manners; even his Automedon (School of Fine Arts), executed in obedience to Academical regulations, was but a lively recollection of a carnival horse-race. At Rome, moreover, Regnault came into contact with the modern Hispano-Italian school, a school highly materialistic and inclined to regard even the human subject only as one amongst many sources whence to obtain amusement for the eye. The vital, if narrow, energy of this school told on Regnault with ever-increasing force during the few remaining years of his life.
In 1868 he had sent to the Salon a life-size portrait of a lady in which he had made one of the first attempts to render the actual character of fashionable modern life. While making a tour in Spain, he saw General Juan Prim pass at the head of his troops, and received that lively image of a military demagogue which he afterwards put on canvas, somewhat to the displeasure of his subject. But this work made an appeal to the imagination of the public, whilst all the later productions of Regnault were addressed exclusively to the eye.
After a further trip to Africa, abridged by the necessities of his position as a pensioner of the school of Rome, he painted Judith, then, in 1870, Salomé, and, as a work due from the Roman school, dispatched from Tangier the large canvas, Execution Without Hearing Under the Moorish Kings, in which the painter had played with the blood of the victim as if he were a jeweller toying with rubies. The Franco-Prussian War arose, and found Regnault foremost in the devoted ranks of the Battle of Buzenval, where he fell on 19 January 1871. His friend, the composer Camille Saint-Saëns dedicated his Marche héroïque (1871) to Regnault's memory. The sculptor Henri Chapu erected a monument to him in the courtyard of the École des Beaux-Arts in 1872.
