"Olimpíadas de Berlín / Olympics in Berlin", 1936. Wikimedia Commons

"Iris og Piphans / Iris y un pichón / Iris & Chicken Little", Valby, 1978 © Morten Bo

"Esna I", Egipto / Egypt, 2011

On May 8 is the birthday of

John Deakin, English photographer born in 1912, best known for his work centred on members of Francis Bacon's Soho inner circle.
Bacon based a number of famous paintings on photographs he commissioned from Deakin, including Portrait of Henrietta Moraes, Henrietta Moraes on a Bed and Three Studies of Lucian Freud.
Deakin also spent many years in Paris and Rome, photographing street scenes, but his only stable period of employment as a photographer were two stints of working for Vogue.
The first period, from 1947 to 1948, ended in dismissal when he lost several valuable bits of photographic equipment. His second period was from 1951 to 1954, and during those three years Deakin was at his most active. He enjoyed the support of Vogue editor Audrey Withers, even though he disliked fashion photography. Deakin excelled at portraits of leading figures in literature, theatre and film. His subjects included Dylan Thomas, John Huston, Luchino Visconti and many other artistic celebrities.
Notorious for "his blistering personality, bad behaviour and total disregard for others", Deakin was fired from Vogue for a second time in 1954, on account of his drinking and "an accumulation of minor incidents involving lateness, a series of crashing tripods, and inevitable arguments with fashion editors." Vogue editor Withers ensured he was paid off handsomely.
Deakin initially aspired to be a painter, and as his photographic career waned, Deakin devoted his time to painting in the 1960s, questioning the validity and status of photography as an art form. He showed little interest in curating and publicising his own work, so many of his photographs were lost, destroyed or damaged over time.
A chronic alcoholic, Deakin died in obscurity and poverty in 1972, but since the 1980s his reputation has grown through monographs, exhibitions and catalogues.

On May 9 is the birthday of

Josef Jindřich Šechtl, Czech photographer born in 1877, who specialized in photojournalism and portrait photography. On the death of his father, photographer Ignác Šechtl, Josef inherited the photographic studios of Šechtl & Voseček.
After finishing lower high school in Tábor, the boy was particularly interested in chemigraphy (a method of printing photographs). In 1891 (at the age of 14) he started to work as a trainee in the polygraphic factory of Jan Vilím in Prague. After two years, in 1893, he changed jobs to work as a photographer in the studio of František Krátký in Kolín. Krátký's studio specialized in stereoscopy and publishing photographs as educational tools, allowing Josef Jindřich to further develop his interests in photographic printing
Josef Jindřich Šechtl had a wide variety of interests in photography, including portrait photography, photojournalism, documenting changes in the town of Tábor, photography of architecture, film, color photography using the Autochrome process, street photography using an early Leica camera, and fine art photography influenced by photographic pictorialism (including use of the bromoil process).
Since the photographs from the Šechtl & Voseček studio are not usually signed by the particular photographer, it is not clear which photographs taken during 1897–1911 were taken by Josef Jindřich or Ignác Šechtl. Josef Jindřich's influence on the work of studio is however apparent. Soon after the start of his career, the studio started to publish large photo essays on important events, and produced postcards signed Šechtl & Voseček.
The photographic work of Josef Jindřich was very much influenced by Anna Stocká, whom he married in 1911. Anna loved art, and thanks to her charm the family befriended several artists living in Tábor, in particular the sculptor Jan Vítězslav Dušek.
Josef Jindřich Šechtl did a number of works in fine art photography; however, most of these photographic prints either have been lost or are in private collections. Many of his architectural photographs have a great artistic quality, in particular those of the old town of Tábor, and his booklet Kutná Hora on that town.
He died in 1954.

On May 10 is the birthday of

Morten Bo, Danish photographer born in 1945, who has specialized in documentary work with a social impact.
His 15 travelling exhibitions in the 1970s and 1980s proved quite controversial. In the 1980s, he turned to more abstract photography with lines, contours and contrasts of light and shade. A member of Delta-Photos from 1967 to 1972, in 1973, he was a co-founder of the Ragnarok group. In line with his interest in promoting the art, he founded Fatamorgana, Denmark's school of art photography, in 1989.
Morten Bo started out in film rather than still photography at the National Film School of Denmark in 1966. He had previously studied architecture and had used photography as a tool to appreciate the concept of space.
There was a distinct change to documentary photography in the 1960s when it began to take the form of series or photo essays. Morten Bo followed the trend, representing the interests of the newly formed party, Venstresocialisterne, which had been founded in 1967. His direct approach, inspired by William Klein's street photography, resulted in a considerable number of photo books, quite an innovation at the time. In 1969, he published his first book Findes der en ridder i orange?. Published in duplex, which was unusual, it presented the dismal street life of Copenhagen with the story of a woman walking through the town. Concern with negative aspects of life was new to photographic publications leading others to follow with works critical of the politics of the day and the Vietnam War.
Next came Blågård Blues in 1971, revealing stark contrasts in the city's street life with nuns presented side-by-side with drug addicts. In 1972, thanks to grants he received from the Arts Foundation and from the National Bank, he was able to travel around Denmark for a whole year. In addition to the travelling exhibition På landet, he published Spor — et folk og en fotograf i 1970erne (Footsteps — a people and a photographer in the 1970s) (1972) with essays entitled Sildefiletfabrikken (Herring filetting plant) or Ud i det fri (Out in the wilds), often concentrating on the ugly or indifferent side of life, including the socially disadvantaged classes.
Bo continued to publish books about life in Denmark whether in the provinces or at the workplace or even, as in Lyset slukkes kl. 22 (Lights out at 10 pm) (1975) among the mentally ill. In 1978, he published Alarm depicting life at a fire station. Folkets skole came out in 1980, criticizing the country's State schools.
His latest experimental book, Røde Missiler (2007) with photographs he took up to 1990, uses a new photographic technique which, in the words of Morten Bo, "made it possible to treat the photographic paper emulsion in a hitherto unseen, expressive, dynamic way. The technique gave me new possibilities to portray the unreal." The pictures combine photography's precise definition with the spontaneous dynamics of art.

On May 11 is the birthday of

Elger Esser, German photographer born in 1967 in Stuttgart, known for his picturesque landscape photographs.
Recalling the works of earlier landscape painters such as Caspar David Friedrich and Albert Bierstadt, Elger’s large-scale images are characterized by their sense of the sublime. Inspired in part by his lifelong interest in collecting postcards, the soft palettes and stillness of the imagery are often features of his practice. Esser was raised in Italy but returned to Germany to work as a commercial photographer. In 1991, he enrolled in the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf, studying with Bernd and Hilla Becher and following on from the famed Düsseldorf School photographers Andreas Gursky, Thomas Struth, and Thomas Ruff. Currently living and working in Düsseldorf, Germany, Esser’s work is in the collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, among others.

On May 12 is the birthday of

Bud Fraker, American photographer born in 1916 in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
He became interested in photography and decided to go California to pursue a career. In 1934 he studied photography at Los Angeles City College and began working part-time at the Columbia Studios stills laboratory under his brother William 'Bill' Fraker, who was the director of the department.  Following his brother's death, Fraker was hired by Hollywood photographer A. L. 'Whitey' Schafer at Columbia.
Soon after he became the Director of Still Photography at Columbia Studios and took many photos of the stars in the late 1930s.
He moved on from there with Schafer in 1942 to work for Paramount studios in the Publicity Photography Department and assisted in the portrait gallery.  Upon Schafer's death he became the studio's own Director of Still Photography, which he did in the 1940s to the 1960's.
Among the films he did still photography on included "Twentieth Century," with Carole Lombard, "King Creole" with Elvis Presley and "Breakfast at Tiffany's" with Audrey Hepburn. He took the famous portrait photos of her with the long cigarette holder, Tiffany diamond jewelry and black dress.
As a matter of fact, although he photographed many of Paramount's top stars, his most enduring work records Audrey Hepburn during the production of her first two films as a star, 'Roman Holiday' (1953) and 'Sabrina' (1954).
After that he decided to leave Paramount and he began doing freelance work for other studios while running his own photo lab. He retired in 1979.
He passed away in 2002.

On May 13 is the birthday of

Mensura Jahi, Bosnian art photographer and painter born in 1958.

Since 2008 she has exhibited her artworks in numerous solo and group exhibitions, national and international levels. Most of these exhibitions have had an international character. The artworks include a variety of artistic techniques: art photography, acrylic on canvas, collage and photo transfer.
For many years she has been present on the world art scene and has been an active participant in many international art symposiums. She is a member of the organizing team of the International Art Symposium Sarajevo.
Jahić is a longterm manager and vice president of Photo Club "Sarajevo", which established in 1947, is the oldest photo club in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Today, May 14, is the birthday of

Alice Boughton, early 20th-century American photographer born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1866, known for her photographs of many literary and theatrical figures of her time. She was a Fellow of Alfred Stieglitz's Photo-Secession, a circle of photographers whose artistic efforts succeeded in raising photography to a fine art form.
In the 1880s, Boughton began studying art and photography at the Pratt School of Art and Design. It was there that she met fellow student Gertrude Käsebier, with whom she later studied in Paris.
In 1890, she opened her own portrait studio in New York, which she maintained for the next forty years.
Around 1901, Boughton studied art in Rome and photography in Paris, where she worked in Käsebier’s summer studio. She won an honorable mention for her work at the Turn International Decorative and Fine Arts Exhibition in 1902.
It is not known when she met Alfred Stieglitz, but it is clear he knew of and admired her work by 1902 when he included two of her works in the inaugural exhibition at his Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession in New York City. Four years later, in 1906, Boughton was appointed by Stieglitz as a Fellow of the Photo-Secession. The following year Stieglitz gave her, along with fellow photographers C. Yarnall Abbot and William B. Dyer, an exhibition at the Little Galleries.
