"Membranas verdes del espacio / Green Membranes of Space"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 65 x 94 cm., 1954

"Hombre / Man", 1966

"Explosión / Outburst", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 91 x 115 cm., 1957

"Le Bain / El baño / The Bath", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 90,2 × 63,5 cm., 1868

On May 1 is the birthday of

Judit Reigl (born Judit Némedy), Hungarian painter born in 1923, living in France.
She attended the Hungarian University of Fine Arts from 1942 to 1945 where she was the student of the celebrated painter István Szőnyi. She was awarded a scholarship from the Academy of Hungary in Rome which allowed her to study in Italy between 1947 and 1948. During her studies there she encountered Byzantine icons, the mosaics of Ravenna, the works of Giotto and Masaccio and the paintings of Venice's Giorgione and Titian amongst others.
In 1950, when the Iron Curtain had divided Hungary and Western Europe, Reigl succeeded in crossing into Western Europe after eight previous attempts. She explained that her home country of Hungary solely commissioned her to paint portraits of ruling Communist leaders such as Stalin, Rákosi and Gerő, and so her defection to the West was necessary to preserve her artistic freedom. Reigl eventually reached Paris by crossing through Austria, Switzerland, Germany and Belgium where she lived from 1950 to 1963. In 1963 she moved to Marcoussis (Île-de-France).
Her early works from her Surrealist period combine elements of photo collage with a mixture of figurative and more abstract elements.
Reigl uses her body as her primary instrument when creating the series Outburst (Éclatement) which she began in 1955. The Outbursts series is different from her earlier paintings with automatic writing in that they no longer use improvised metal tools to make spontaneous gestural marks. She began with throwing thick industrial pigment mixed with linseed oil onto the canvas with her hands and continued by vigorously scraping it from the center to the edges with a tool.
For her following series Mass Writing (Écriture en masse), Reigl applied large volumes of thick, slow-drying black pigment to the canvas using a blade or a stick, and then painted with upward strokes.
Some of her subsequent series include Man, Drap/décodage and Facing... (Face à...). They display Reigl's desire for liberation from her own body by investigating the human figure.

On May 2 is the birthday of

Marc Gabriel Charles Gleyre, Swiss artist born in 1806, resident in France from an early age. He took over the studio of Paul Delaroche in 1843 and taught a number of younger artists who became prominent, including Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley, James Abbott McNeill Whistler and Louis-Frederic Schützenberger.
He began his formal artistic education in Lyon under Bonnefond, before moving to Paris, where he enrolled at the École des Beaux-Art under Hersent. He also attended the Academie Suisse and studied watercolour technique in the studio of Richard Parkes Bonington. He then went to Italy, where he became acquainted with Horace Vernet and Louis Léopold Robert.
It was through Vernet's recommendation that he was chosen by the American traveller John Lowell Jr. to accompany him on his journeys round the eastern Mediterranean, recording the scenes and ethnographic subjects they met with. They left Italy in spring 1834 and visited Greece, Turkey and Egypt, where they remained together until November 1835, when Lowell left for India. Gleyre continued his travels around Egypt and Syria, not returning to France until 1838.
He established a modest studio in the rue de Université, began carefully to work out the ideas which had been slowly shaping themselves in his mind. Mention is made of two decorative panels Diana leaving the Bath, and a Young Nubian as almost the first fruits of his genius; but these did not attract public attention until much later, and the painting by which he practically opened his artistic career was the Apocalyptic Vision of St John, sent to the Salon of 1840. This was followed in 1843 by Evening, which received a medal of the second class, and afterwards became widely popular under the title Lost Illusions.
In spite of the success of these first ventures, Gleyre retired from public competition, and spent the rest of his life in quiet devotion to his artistic ideals, neither seeking the easy applause of the crowd, nor turning his art into a means of aggrandizement and wealth.
He died in 1874.

On May 3 is the birthday of

Brian Whelan, British artist born in London in 1957 of Irish parents. After his training at the Royal Academy of Arts, he lived and worked in the East Anglia area of England near the North Sea for over 25 years.
Brian’s journey as an artist began its definitive gateway just outside his own studio door, in the medieval churches and dwellings of East Anglia. The vestiges of the medieval art form resonate with Brian’s Irish Catholic roots, back to a time when there was one church and from its painted walls great stories were told. His oeuvre, like much medieval art, depicts a sublime comedy of life’s glories and tragedies.
In addition to painting religious subjects, Brian also feels compelled to paint London, the city of his birth. He has discovered that only from the safety of his studio in the countryside can he produce these cityscapes, as if memory proves to be the only way the vast subject matter can be put into a work of art. He accomplishes this by using multi-perspectives and contradictory scales, bending, twisting and organising the urban chaos into harmony.
Brian’s work has been exhibited extensively and highlights from the recent past include an international tour in 2010 of The Quiet Men, works inspired by the London-Irish diaspora, which visited West London’s PM Gallery, where award winning journalist Fergal Keane opened the exhibition; the Celtic Fringe show at the Liceo de Noya Institute in Galicia Spain; and the Villanova University Art Gallery in Philadelphia. The tour was accompanied by the publication of the London Irish Painting Book by the Irish Embassy and Irish World Newspaper.
Since 2013, he and his American wife, Wendy Roseberry, have split their time between the Waterford Studio in Virginia, the UK and Ireland, while Mandell’s Gallery on historic Elm Hill in Norwich, England continues to represent and exhibit Brian’s work in the UK.

On May 4 is the birthday of

Edo Murtić, painter from Croatia born in 1921, best known for his lyrical abstraction and abstract expressionism style.
He worked in a variety of media, including oil painting, gouache, graphic design, ceramics, mosaics, murals and theatrical set design. Murtić travelled and exhibited extensively in Europe and North America, gaining international recognition for his work, which can be found museums, galleries and private collections worldwide. He was one of the founders of the group "March" (Mart) in 1956, and received many international awards. In 1958 Murtić participated in the three biggest events in the world of contemporary art: the Venice Biennale, the Carnegie Prize in Pittsburgh, and Documenta in Kassel. Interest in the art of Edo Murtić continues to grow, with retrospective exhibits in major museums.
Murtić was a member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and a member of the Croatian Helsinki Committee for Human Rights.
He died in 2005.

On May 5 is the birthday of

Francine Van Hove, French painter born in 1942 in Saint-Mandé.
She studied in Paris and received a Fine Arts degree with qualifications to teach in secondary schools. After teaching one year at Lycee de Jeunes Filles in Strasbourg, she resigned from her position and decided to come back to Paris in 1964 where she now lives and continues to paint.
She is known for her paintings of young women with dreaming attitudes. Her graphic and pictorial techniques are reminiscent of Italian Renaissance painters and Flemish painters of the 16th and 17th centuries. Is particularly noted for the the refined details of her subjects, and the transparent skin tones of her nudes, which she always works from life. The expression of beauty, sensuality, meditation and freedom is the philosophy behind this artist’s work, that until now counts more than 400 paintings, all privately owned, as well as numerous drawings and pastels.
In 2014, Alain Blondel, her historic art dealer, retired after having promoted her work for 32 years. Since then, Francine Van Hove is represented by Jean-Marie Oger, former assistant at galerie Alain Blondel.

Today, May 6, is the birthday of

Bernhard Afinger, German sculptor born in Nuremberg in 1813.
He studied old German sculptures in Nuremberg. He was for a time a silversmith, and in 1840 began instruction under Christian Daniel Rauch at Berlin.
After his initial training he traveled as an official, and on the occasion of the festival of Dürer in 1840 he met Christian Daniel Rauch, who convinced him to move to Berlin, welcoming him as a student in his studio. There, he opened his own workshop in 1846. In 1873 he traveled through Italy. In 1874 he was appointed Member of the Senate of the Academy of the Arts of Prussia and professor.
In portrait medallions and works of a religious character he was particularly successful. Among many other woks, there's an Arndt memorial by him at Bonn, a university memorial at Greifswald, and a statue of Newton in the National Museum, Pesth.
He died in 1882.
