A Barn on the Bank of a Stream in Gelderland"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 52,5 x 63 cm., c.1805-1810

"Het Raampoortje / El Rammpoortje / The Raamgate in Amsterdam"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 57 x 48 cm., 1809

"Zelfportret / Autorretrato / Self Portrait"
Óleo sobre papel, sobre cartón, en panel / oil on paper, on cardboard on panel, 51,3 x 40 cm., c.1809

The artist recalled in an interview on 7 September 1981 that the portrait was painted in about 1927 in his studio in Grosvenor Road, Pimlico. He first met the policeman while he was trying to break into his own studio, having forgotten his keys, and they remained friends for some years. The map on the wall and the objects on the table were arranged specifically for this portrait. Tate

"Mujer negra / Black Woman", óleo sobre panel / oil on panel, 55 x 39,5 cm., 1889
Galería Nacional (Ljubljana, Eslovenia / Slovenia)

"Autorretrato / Self Portrait", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 65 x 51 cm., 1889

"Estudio de un hombre / Study of a Man", 1886

"Mujer sentada semidesnuda / Sitting Female Semi Nude", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 100 x 81 cm., c.1888

"Pieta na dvoře / Piedad en el parque / Pieta in the Yard"
Punta seca con monotipo / dry point with monotype, 160 x 246 cm., 1950

"Dvůr v zimě II / El parque en invierno / The yard in winter II"
Punta seca con monotipo / dry point with monotype, 22,8 x 20 cm., 1955

"Pieta VI", aguafuerte coloreada con monotipo / colored etching with a monotype, 24,5 x 16 cm., 1950

Punta seca coloreada con monotipo / colored dry point with monotype, 24,7 x 16,1 cm., 1951

Textos en inglés / English translation

On May 28 is the birthday of

Wouter Johannes van Troostwijk,  Dutch painter and etcher born in 1792. Most of his works are landscapes (featuring cattle) or cityscapes.
He was born into a wealthy family. His father was a cloth merchant, but was also known as a chemist and physicist. Many scientists were guests at their home, which inspired his interest in nature. He began sketching and his talent was soon evident, so he was given drawing lessons by Anthonie Andriessen and painting lessons by Anthonie's brother, Juriaan.
In 1803, he enrolled at the "Amsterdam Municipal Academy of Drawing". Two years later he joined the Felix Meritis society, where he won two medals for his work. His style was inspired by Paulus Potter and Jacob van Ruisdael.
He never became a full-time artist. After 1805, he served as concierge at the Amsterdam City Hall, where he lived and had his studio. He devoted himself to painting before and after his working hours and used his days off to paint "en plein aire" (as it would later be called). He also took up etching; when he burned his foot and had to spend his time sitting at home.
Ultimately, his passion for painting outdoors proved fatal. He worked too long on a cold Autumn night, came down with a high fever, and succumbed a few days later. Only eight of his paintings are on public display, but there are numerous drawings, sketches and studies.
He died in 1810.

On May 29 is the birthday of

Edward Wolfe, British painter of flowers, figures and landscape born in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1897.
He studied at the Slade School 1916-18 and worked at the Omega Workshops with Roger Fry. Exhibited at the London Group from 1918, member 1923; also member of the National Society, 7&5 Society 1926-31, and the London Artists' Association. First one-man exhibition at the Mayor Gallery 1925. Painted in South Africa 1919-21, in Paris 1922, Italy 1923, Spain and Morocco 1927, New York and Mexico 1934-7, and again in South Africa 1956-8.
He died in 1982.

On May 30 is the birthday of

Anton Ažbe, Slovene realist painter and teacher of painting born in 1862.
Ažbe, crippled since birth and orphaned at the age of 8, learned painting as an apprentice to Janež Wolf and at the Academies in Vienna and Munich. At the age of 30 Ažbe founded his own school of painting in Munich that became a popular attraction for Eastern European students. Ažbe trained the "big four" Slovenian impressionists (Rihard Jakopič, Ivan Grohar, Matej Sternen, Matija Jama) and a whole generation of Russian painters (Ivan Bilibin, Mstislav Dobuzhinsky, Igor Grabar, Wassily Kandinsky, Dmitry Kardovsky and Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin, to name a few). Ažbe's training methods were adopted and reused by Russian artists both at home (Grabar, Kardovsky) and in emigration (Bilibin, Dobuzhinsky).
Ažbe's own undisputed artistic legacy is limited to twenty-six graphic works, including classroom studies, most of them at the National Gallery of Slovenia. His long-planned masterpieces never materialized and, according to Peter Selz, he "never came into his own as an artist". His enigmatic personality blended together alcoholism, chain smoking, bitter loneliness, minimalistic simple living in private, and eccentric behaviour in public. A public scarecrow and a bohemian socialite, Ažbe protected his personal secrets till the end, a mystery even to his students and fellow teachers. The public transformed the circumstances of his untimely death in 1905 from cancer into an urban legend.

Today, May 31, is the birthday of

Bohuslav Reynek, one of the most important Czech poets, writers, painters and translators of the 20th century, born in 1892
In 1904-1911 he studied at Grammar School in Jihlava (German Iglau), Bohemia. There he learned both French and German. After a short time studying at Prague University, he left Prague for Petrkov. In 1926 he married the French poet Suzanne Renaud, whose work he would later translate into Czech. In 1914, he started his long-time and close cooperation with Josef Florian in the town of Stará Říše translating, illustrating and publishing his own poetry. He and Suzanne had two sons, Daniel (b. 1928 - d. 2014) and Jiří (b. 1929 - d. 2014). In 1949 his farmstead was confiscated by the new Communist state (he and his family were allowed to live on in Petrkov), and the publishers that had heretofore published his work were closed down. He died in 1971 on his farmstead, and was buried nearby in Svatý Kříž in the family grave.
His poems are meditative and inspired by the Czech landscape, rural life in the manor and deep Christian humanism. What is noteworthy is the delicate way in which religious themes are refracted through images of his immediate surroundings; the poems invest everyday objects and scenes (such as the farm animals, the rhythms of the working week) with a spiritual luminescence, a bright edge, and this is done so delicately that at no point does it feel imposed. He employs, for the most part, traditional forms, with inventive rhymes.
Reynek was a graphic artist and a translator of French and German. Among the poets he translated was the German expressionist Georg Trakl, and it is clear that he learnt much from Trakl's techniques.
After the Communist revolution of 1948, Reynek's manor was confiscated and devastated, his books were prohibited and those of public libraries liquidated because of Reynek's Christian faith. He died poor with his works banned but became a hero to young Czech poets of the 1960s and 1970s, the most prominent of which were Ivan Martin Jirous, Zbyněk Hejda and Ivan Diviš. His work was published in exile and after 1989 a critical edition of his poems was completed and edited by Torst Publishing House, Prague. The French author Sylvie Germain wrote Bohuslav Reynek à Petrkov (1998), a meditation on his life and art.
