On April 25 is the birthday of

Vanessa Beecroft, Italian contemporary artist living in Los Angeles. She was born in Genoa in 1969.
From 1983 to 1987 she studied architecture at the Nicolò Barabino Civic Art School in her hometown.
From 1987 to 1988 she studied at the Accademia Ligustica Di Belle Arti, in the specialty of linguistics.
From 1988 to 1993 she studied at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts (design) in Milan.
Married to the sociologist Greg Durkin, they have two children.
From 1994 she began a series of performances with her personal brand. Throughout one night, usually the premiere, a group of women or men, remain in the gallery or museum room.
Earlier performances tended to feature a handful of girls wearing high heels (Beecroft calls heels 'pedestals'), cheap costumes and wardrobe, allusions to European cinema (films by Fassbinder, Godard, Visconti) and classical painting (Rembrandt, Holbein, della Francesca), and red, yellow or platinum wigs. As budgets grew in proportion to her reputation, she started using professional models, strikingly presented by make-up artists such as Pat McGrath, and wearing clothes and accessories loaned or specially created by fashion designers such as Miuccia Prada, Tom Ford, Helmut Lang, Dolce & Gabbana, and Manolo Blahnik, all eager to associate themselves with Beecroft's complex vision.
As Maria Elena Buszek, an art historian at the Kansas City Art Institute, explains: 'Beecroft is the veritable poster-girl for our current, third wave of feminist art history. There's an ambivalence in her work that is present in the work of many of her contemporaries, which is the result of a culture that has both internalised feminist goals more than any generation that preceded it, and chafes against what it perceives as feminism's restraints.'
These beautiful and disturbing tableaux vivants are always staged twice (once for the public, once for photographing and filming: Beecroft's network of dealers trade in limited-edition photographs and DVD/video films of each performance).

On April 26 is the birthday of

Zbigniew Andrzej Dłubak, Polish painter, photographer, and art theoretician born in 1921 in Radomsko.
During World War II, following the AB Action aimed at the Polish intelligentsia and Scouting movement, he was arrested and sent to the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp, but managed to survive.
In 1945 he returned to Poland, where he took an active part in the reconstruction of Polish artistic life after six years of foreign occupation. He became one of the cofounders of Grupa 55. He also cooperated with various art galleries and artistic groups, among them Krzywe Koło, Współczesna, Mała Galeria, Labirynt, Zamek, Remont, Permafo, and Foto-Medium-Art. Between 1953 and 1972 he was editor-in-chief of the Fotografia monthly. He was also a tutor at the National Film School in Łódź and at the Higher School of Fine Arts in Łódź.
In 1975 he organized a group of youngsters interested in art theory into the Seminarium Warszawskie (Warsaw Seminary) group and discussion club. In 1982, during the period of Martial law in Poland, he was allowed to leave the country and settled in Meudon near Paris.
In his oeuvre he had, among others, series of paintings (Wojna, Macierzyństwo, Amonity, Antropolity, Movens, Systemy) and cycles of photography (Egzystencje, Gestykulacje). He was one of the winners of 'Nagroda Prezesa Rady Ministrów I stopnia' (The Prime Minister's Award of the I Grade) in 1979. He was awarded with order of Krzyża Grunwaldu of the third grade, Złoty i Srebrny Krzyżem Zasługi, Krzyż Walecznych.
He died in 2005.

On April 27 is the birthday of

Gary Mark Smith, American street photographer born in 1956. Smith is noted for his empathetic and literal style of photography sometimes captured in extremely hazardous circumstances.
In high school he began photographing street life in Washington Square in nearby New York City. In 1984 he earned a BS in journalism from the University of Kansas at Lawrence. In 1996 he earned a Master of Arts degree, the product of a full teaching fellowship provided by Purdue University at West Lafayette, Indiana.
Between 1982 and 2005 Smith became recognized as a street photographer and distinguished by blurring the line between journalism (documentary) and art. His projects included:
- Cold War: Several expeditions to the Cold War inspired guerrilla wars in El Salvador and Guatemala, and Nicaragua.
- Molten Memoirs: In September 1997 Smith gained access to the 'death zone' of Salem, Montserrat in the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean, becoming one of the 200 famous volcano holdouts there who refused to leave until a near-fatal close call eruption of the Soufriere Hills Volcano on September 22, 1997 finally forced the holdouts to flee.
- Tora Bora: An American Global Street Photographer’s Post 9-11 View of the Streets of the Afghanistan/Pakistan Tribal Belt at the Time of Tora Bora.
- The Aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the Flood of New Orleans.
- Rocinha favela, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: Lived in and photographed the largest gang-occupied favela in Rio de Janeiro before pre-World Cup pacification in 2011.
- Goma, Congo: Embedded himself inside the United Nations peacekeeping mission in North Kivu, the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Photographed life on the streets of Goma, capital city of the Congo Wars that have taken the lives of more than 5.4 million since the Rwanda Genocide in 1993; also photographing life in the infamous Mugunga refugee camp on the flanks of Mount Nyiragongo volcano.

On April 28 is the birthday of

Frank Horvat, photographer born 1928 in Abbazia (Italy), now Opatija (Croatia), presently living and working in France.
He is best known for his fashion photography, published between the mid 1950s and the end of the 1980s, but his photographic opus includes photojournalism, portraiture, landscape, nature and sculpture. In 1988, he produced a major book of interviews with fellow photographers (such as Don McCullin, Robert Doisneau, Sarah Moon, Helmut Newton, Marc Riboud). At the beginning of the 1990s, he was one of the first to experiment with Photoshop. In 1998, he replaced his professional equipment with a compact camera, which he always carries in his pocket, in order to shoot anything, at any moment that seems to him of some interest. In 2011, he put online his first iPad application (Horvatland).

* He died on October 21, 2020

On April 29 is the birthday of

Elina Brotherus, Finnish photographer and video artist born in Helsinki in 1972, specializing in self-portraits and landscapes.
She earned an M.S. in analytical chemistry from the University of Helsinki in 1997 and an M.F.A. in photography from the University of Art and Design Helsinki in 2000. She is considered a prominent member of The Helsinki School. She lives and works in Finland and France. In 2003 her work was exhibited by the Orange County Museum of Art in Girls’ Night Out. She won a scholarship from the Carnegie Art Award in 2004 and she won the Niépce Prize in 2006. She is proud of being able to produce images taken from nature that are not "Photoshopped". Her work is primarily autobiographical. She documents her infertility and "involuntary childlessness" in her 2011-2015 series "Carpe Fucking Diem", 2009-2013 "Annonciation".
Other Series are "Model Studies" (2002-2008), "Artist and Her Model" (2005-2011), "Artists at Work" (2009), 12 Ans Aprés (1999 - 2011-13), and "Les Femmes de la Maison Carré" (2015)

Today, April 30, is the birthday of

George "Georg" Gerster, Swiss journalist and a pioneer aerial photographer born in Winterthur in 1928.
In 1950 Gerster earned a doctorate at the University of Zurich in Germanistik. Through 1956 he worked as an editor for the inhabitants of Zurich's "World Week". Since then he has been active as a freelance journalist with an emphasis on science reporting and flight photography.
In this photographic field of activity he did substantial pioneer work in the 1950s and 1960s, respected not only for the technology and quality of his flight pictures, but above all for the universality and internationality of the topics.
Gerster's early photographic reportage and picture volumes detailed landscapes of North Africa. In the sixties he documented places of archaeological interest in over 100 countries on all continents. In addition, he took breath-taking pictures of mountains and deserts, coasts and lakes, agrarian and industrial landscapes.
George Gerster was honored in 1976 with the Prix Nadar. His photos have been shown in single and group exhibitions in Europe, Japan and the USA. He was represented by the Rapho photo agency.
Gerster emphasizes, on the one hand, the beauty of the landscape; on the other hand he points out the endangerment to nature caused by excessive use, erosion, technology and mechanization.

"La letra escarlata / The Scarlet Letter"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 99,9 x 81,1 cm., 1861
Walters Art Museum (Baltimore, EE.UU./ USA). Wikimedia Commons

Nathaniel Hawthorne, author of "The Scarlet Letter" (1850), regarded this painting, which William Walters commissioned from Merle in 1859, as the finest illustration of his novel. Set in Puritan Boston, the novel relates how Hester Prynne was publicly disgraced and condemned to wear a scarlet letter "A" for adultery. Arthur Dimmesdale, the minister who fathered her child, and Roger Chillingworth, Hester's elderly husband, appear in the background. Merle's canvas reflects some of the same 19th-century historical interest in the Puritans as Hawthorne's book, a fascination that reached its peak with the establishment of Thanksgiving as a national holiday in 1863. By depicting Hester and her daughter, Pearl, in a pose that recalls that of the Madonna and Child, Merle underlines "The Scarlet Letter"'s themes of sin and redemption.

Freeman's

"Mensch in der Landschaft / Persona en un paisaje / Person in Landscape"

On April 23 is the birthday of

James Sant, British painter specialising in portraits born in 1820 in Croydon, Surrey, England, known particularly for images of women, children and artistic exploration of the symbolism of childhood. He was a member of the Royal Academy. His brother George and sister Sarah were also artists.
He was taught first by the watercolourist John Varley, then by Augustus Wall Callcott, then from the age of twenty was taught by the schools of the Royal Academy.
He exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery as well as producing nearly three hundred canvases for exhibition at the Academy. The first of these, a portrait of his father William Sant, was exhibited in 1840; the last was exhibited in 1915.
His 1853 picture of the infant Samuel was his first popular success, and engravings of this and of Little Red Riding Hood and The Soul’s Awakening sold in great numbers.
In 1861, his portraits of friends were exhibited by Ernest Gambart at his Gallery in Pall Mall. This enhanced his reputation and he was elected ARA, and later RA; in 1871 he was appointed Principal Painter in Ordinary (official portraitist) to Queen Victoria, having become known for his portraits of the royal children and in particular his 1870 portrait of Prince Leopold and Princess Beatrice.
Sant is best known for his portraits of children. Nevertheless, many of his pictures were landscapes and particularly gardens; he also painted seascapes, landscapes with animals, and other subjects. His later pictures are freer in style and some have a visionary or mannerist quality; his landscapes could include figures with blank or distorted features or simple silhouettes.
He died in 1916.

On April 24 is the birthday of

Gaston Bussière, French Symbolist painter and illustrator born in 1862.
He studied at l'Académie des Beaux-Arts in Lyon before entering the école des beaux-arts de Paris where he studied under Alexandre Cabanel and Pierre Puvis de Chavannes. In 1884, he won the Marie Bashkirtseff prize.
He was close to Gustave Moreau. He found inspiration in the theatre works of Berlioz (La Damnation de Faust) as well as William Shakespeare and Wagner. He became in demand as an illustrator, creating works for major authors. He illustrated Honoré de Balzac's Splendeurs et misères des courtisanes published in 1897, Émaux et camées, written by Théophile Gautier, as well as Oscar Wilde's Salomé. He also illustrated several works by Flaubert.
An associate of Joséphin Péladan, the founder of the Rose-Croix esthétique, Bussière exhibited his works at Salon de la Rose-Croix over two years.
Many of his works are on exhibit at the Musée des Ursulines in Mâcon.
He died in 1928 or 1929.

On April 25 is the birthday of

Minoru Kano, Japanese sculptor born in Tokyo in 1930, who lived and worked in France.
After a childhood marked by the Second World War, in 1949, entered the National University of the Arts at his native city. In 1954 he won the Young Sculpture Award in Tokyo.
In 1957, thanks to a study grant from the French government, he settled in Paris, where he attended the Janiot workshop at the National School of Fine Arts. In 1958 he attended the workshop of Ossip Zadkine at the Academy Gran Chaumière in Paris.
Between the years 1959 and 1964 he studied Romanesque art. Fruit of this study is the realization of stone reproduction a monumental size of the famous "Eve of the Cathedral of Autun" (Éva de Autun) of Gislebertus.
From 1964 he left the marble and the stone, working since then with resins. In 1973 he participated in the symposium of sculpture of the Forest of Sénart in the region of Brie. Since the 90's, he worked exclusively with plywood.
He died in 2007.

Gardiner’s work has been included in several important exhibitions including ‘A Panoramic View’ at Pallant House Gallery in Chichester; ‘Exploring the Elemental’ at Paisnel Gallery, St James’s, London; ‘Unfolding Landscape’ at Kings Place Gallery, London; ‘Shorelines’ at St Barbe Museum, Lymington, and ‘Facing History’ at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

On April 27 is the birthday of

Samuel Finley Breese Morse, American painter and inventor born in 1791.
After having established his reputation as a portrait painter, in his middle age Morse contributed to the invention of a single-wire telegraph system based on European telegraphs. He was a co-developer of the Morse code and helped to develop the commercial use of telegraphy.
After attending Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, Samuel Morse went on to Yale College to receive instruction in the subjects of religious philosophy, mathematics, and science of horses. While at Yale, he attended lectures on electricity from Benjamin Silliman and Jeremiah Day and was a member of the Society of Brothers in Unity. He supported himself by painting. In 1810, he graduated from Yale with Phi Beta Kappa honors.
His painting, Landing of the Pilgrims attracted the attention of the notable artist, Washington Allston, who wanted Morse to accompany him to England to meet the artist Benjamin West. There he perfected his painting techniques. By the end of 1811, he gained admittance to the Royal Academy, where he was moved by the art of the Renaissance and paid close attention to the works of Michelangelo and Raphael. After observing and practicing life drawing and absorbing its anatomical demands, the young artist produced his masterpiece, the Dying Hercules.
He left England in 1815, to return to the United States and begin his full-time career as a painter. The decade 1815-1825 marked significant growth in Morse's work, as he sought to capture the essence of America's culture and life. He painted the Federalist former President John Adams (1816), and also sought commissions among the elite of Charleston, South Carolina.
In 1826, he helped found the National Academy of Design in New York City. He served as the Academy's President from 1826 to 1845 and again from 1861 to 1862. From 1830 to 1832, Morse traveled and studied in Europe to improve his painting skills, visiting Italy, Switzerland, and France.
He died in 1872.

On April 28 is the birthday of

Hugues Merle, French painter born in 1822 in La Sône, Isère, who mostly depicted sentimental or moral subjects. He has often been compared with William-Adolphe Bouguereau.
He studied painting with Léon Cogniet. Merle started exhibiting at the Salon (Paris) in 1847. He received second class prizes in 1861 and 1863. In 1866 he was made Chevalier of the Legion of Honor.
Hugues Merle became a friend of Paul Durand-Ruel in the early 1860s. Durand-Ruel had started buying paintings by Merle in 1862 and introduced the artist to painter William-Adolphe Bouguereau. Merle was later often compared to Bouguereau and “became a considerable rival of Bouguereau in subject and treatment”. In the mid-1860s, he painted several portraits of Paul Durand-Ruel, his wife, and their son, John.
He died in 1881 in Paris. His son Georges Merle also became a painter.

Today, April 29, is the birthday of

Johann Michael Neder, Austrian painter born in 1807 in Vienna.
Neder was born in the suburb of Oberdöbling, as the son of the shoemaker master Johann Michael Neder and his wife Maria Anna Hengl. After studying the cobbler's craft with his father, he recognized the artistic talent of Neders, and from 1821 to 1829 he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he was a pupil of Karl Gsellhofer. In 1826 he received the Czernin Prize. In 1830 he exhibited for the first time in the Academy. But since he doubted his artistic talent, he gave up the painting in the same year and worked again as a shoemaker. Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller did not think of Neders talent.
Encouraged by Moritz Daffinger and Friedrich Gauermann, Neder turned back to art in 1834. In 1834/35 he made a trip to Salzburg and the Berchtesgadener Land and stayed for a long time in Kremsmünster. In 1848, during the revolution was Neder Leutnant the Nationalgarde. He lived in modest circumstances in Vienna, only interrupted by short stays in Prague and Budapest in the 1950s. In 1861-1875 he owned a house in Sievering.
Neder died in Obersievering in 1882.

On April 30 is the birthday of

Aloys Wach (Aloys Ludwig Wachelmayr, sometimes Wachelmeier), Austrian expressionist painter and graphic artist born in 1892 in Lambach, Upper Austria.
While his birth places him close to the generation that laid the foundations of modern art and especially expressionism, his life as an artist, however, began after cubism, futurism and the expressionists of the Der Blaue Reiter and Die Brücke movements had initiated a time of great changes.
Wach decided to become an artist early on in his life, and arrived in Vienna at the young age of 17, but initially suffered a series of setbacks. He was rejected as a student by the Academy in Munich and attempted unsuccessfully to study art in Vienna. He received formal education at the Knirr-Sailer painting school in Munich as well as, in 1913, the Académie Colarossi in Paris. He finished his studies with Heinrich Altherr in Stuttgart.
In 1912, he briefly moved to Berlin. There, he met painter and graphic artist Jacob Steinhardt, who encouraged him to abandon older forms of expression and be courageous in the search for his own style. Although it is not known for certain, he also probably saw the Blaue Reiter Exhibition and the first exhibits of the futurist movement.
He then moved on to Paris, where he stayed from 1913 to 1914. He befriended Amedeo Modigliani and was introduced to some of the painters at the Bateau-Lavoir.
In 1915 and 1916, Wach created a series of woodcuts showing the horror of war. Postcard-size woodcuts such as Ein Totentanz von 1914 ('A Dead Dance of 1914') and Straße der Schicksale ('Road of Destiny') depict an industrialized war of detonating bullets and dying soldiers. Wach, Georg Schrimpf and Fritz Schaefler were members of the short-lived but important Aktionsauschuss Revolutionärer Künstler (Action Committee of Revolutionary Artists) which formed in 1919. Wach's woodcuts appeared in connection with radical causes and drew widespread attention in the daily press, at risk to himself.
In his later life, Wach abandoned his artistic roots and distanced himself from his early expressionist works by turning to religious imagery.
He died in 1940.
