Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 154 × 206 cm., c.1837

On March 1 is the birthday of

Yuki Ogura (小倉 遊亀), Japanese nihonga painter born in 1895 in Ōtsu city, Shiga Prefecture. Her maiden name was Yuki Mizoguchi. She was known for her bijinga (*).
She graduated from the Nara Women's Normal School (the predecessor of Nara Women's University). She was employed as a school teacher, but her interest in art led her to study under noted Nihonga painter Yukihiko Yasuda in 1920.
In 1926, her painting Kyuri ("Cucumbers") was selected for an Inten Exhibition by the Japan Fine Arts Academy (Nihon Bijutsu-in) . Ogura became the first female member of the Japan Fine Arts Academy in 1932. She specialized in graceful family scenes, still life, and pictures of women. During the 1950s and 1960s, she painted many large portraits of friends and family members. Although Ogura never departed from the traditional framework of the Nihonga style, her figure paintings are often described by contemporary critics as "modern," both in style and content.
A very prolific artist, in 1976, she was selected to become a member of the Japan Art Academy (Nihon Geijitsu-in), and later become honorary chairperson of that organization. She was awarded the Order of Culture in 1980, and is one of only two women painters (the other being fellow Nihonga painter Uemura Shōen) to be so honored.
Her studio and home were located in Kamakura. She he lived to the age of 105.
(*) Bijinga is a generic term for pictures of beautiful women in Japanese art, especially in woodblock printing of the ukiyo-e genre.

On March 2 is the birthday of

Eduard Kurzbauer, Austrian painter born in 1840. Some sources give Lemberg as his place of birth.
His father was a teacher at the Vienna Polytechnic Institute. In 1856, he began to study lithography, but wasn't satisfied and switched to the Academy of Fine Arts where he remained until 1861, when his father was unable to continue paying his tuition and still support a large family.
Friends came to his assistance, but it wasn't until 1867 that he achieved some success with his painting "The Storyteller". This helped him obtain a position in the studios of Karl von Piloty in Munich, where he worked for two years. His associates there included Hans Makart and Franz Defregger. Afterwards, he continued to study independently and scored his first major success in 1870 with his genre painting Die ereilten Flüchtlinge (The Refugees), which was purchased for the gallery of the Schloss Belvedere. This sale, the commissions that followed and the fees from several students enabled him to take a long-desired study trip to Rome and Naples.
Unfortunately, an ailment he acquired there was left untreated until it was too late. After courageously suffering through several painful operations, he died at the age of thirty-eight (1879), still at work, even on his death bed.
He had a sharp eye for interesting situations and human characteristics, with an occasional splash of roguish humor. Even when representing weakness and suffering, he knew how to maintain the correct tone, without pathos. He is considered a master of chiaroscuro.
In 1889, a street in Leopoldstadt was named the "Kurzbauergasse" in his honor.

On March 3 is the birthday of

Ivon Hitchens, English painter born in 1893 who started exhibiting during the 1920s.
He became part of the 'London Group' of artists and exhibited with them during the 1930s. His house was bombed in 1940 during World War II, at which point he moved to a caravan on a patch of woodland near Petworth in West Sussex. He worked there for the next forty years, gradually augmenting his caravan with a series of buildings. He is particularly well known for panoramic landscape paintings created from blocks of colour. There is a huge mural by him in the main hall of Cecil Sharp House. His work was exhibited in the British Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 1956.
Ivon’s son John Hitchens and grandson Simon Hitchens are both artists.
He died in 1979.

Today, March 4, is the birthday of

Wijnand Jan Josephus Nuijen, Dutch painter and printmaker born in 1813 in Den Haag, who specialised in landscapes, and was greatly influenced by the French Romantics.
Nuijen was apprenticed at age twelve to Andreas Schelfhout, a local artist. Between 1825 and 1829 he studied at the Den Haag Tekenacademie, under Bartholomeus Johannes van Hove. In his short lifespan Nuijen became a prolific painter of rural and marine landscapes, spending much time on the Normandy and northern French coasts. Here he fell under the spell of painters who were working in France, such as Richard Parkes Bonington (1802–1828) and Eugene Isabey (1803–1886), both of whom painted picturesque villages, Normandy harbours and seascapes, with a spontaneity Nuijen admired and adopted. His preoccupation with ruins is typically Romantic and his use of colour and texture is reminiscent of the watercolours of Turner.
The Felix Meritis society of Amsterdam awarded him a medal in 1829 for his watercolour of a forest landscape. On completion of his tuition he travelled to Belgium, France and Germany, at times with his painting companion Antonie Waldorp (1803–1866). Nuijen became a member of the Koninklijke Akademie in Amsterdam in 1836, and just before his death he married the daughter of Schelfhout, his former tutor.
Nuijen was unusual among Dutch painters of the period, his theatricality and liberal style contrasting with the near photographic depiction that was then the norm. King William II greatly admired Nuijen's work, and when he bought the "Shipwreck" in 1843 he already owned five other Nuijen paintings.
He died in 1839.
