Some were shown at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts, winning medals in 1884 and 1887 for paintings on Italian subjects. He received many more medals over the next two decades, including a Medal of Honor at the Exposition Universelle (1900). From 1893 to 1910, he drew illustrations for several periodicals, including La Ilustración Española y Americana, and Blanco y Negro.
In addition to his paintings and drawings, he worked on many public projects, completing the work begun by Sala at the Casino de Madrid and providing decorations for the Círculo de Bellas Artes.

He befriended many African-American visual artists while living in Sweden, such as Herbert Gentry and Harvey Cropper. In 1998 Harris returned to the United States and his home town of Pittsburgh. He was elected into The Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, the nation's second oldest artists' association, where he felt welcomed by the African-American sculptor Thaddeus Mosley. Harris later moved to Eugene, Oregon, and currently lives in Chico, California.
He has exhibited throughout Sweden, elsewhere in Europe, and in the United States in various galleries and museums.

On November 24 is the birthday of

Ángel Lizcano Monedero y Esteban, Spanish painter and illustrator born in 1846. He specialized in costumbrist and historical scenes.
When he was seven, his family moved to Madrid to open a bookstore. At the age of fourteen, he began his art studies at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, where he graduated with honors. He continued his education by copying the Old Masters at the Museo del Prado.
In 1869, he received a stipend from Manuel Antonio, Marqués de Bedmar, to complete his studies in Italy. Later, he toured much of Spain and participated in the National Exposition of Fine Arts, where he sold a painting to King Amedeo I. All together, he received four medals at various expositions from 1876 to 1887. For many years, he continued to work as an itinerant artist.
He also gained a reputation as an illustrator and engraver, providing images for a wide variety of magazines, books and posters; over 800 in all. La Ilustración Española y Americana was one of his most favored periodicals. Among his best known book illustrations were those for the Episodios Nacionales by Benito Pérez Galdós, and theatrical pieces by Vital Aza, Tomás Luceño, Miguel Ramos Carrión and Ricardo de la Vega. He also illustrated classics, including the sainetes of Ramón de la Cruz. Some of his works were adapted for postcards by the French photographer, Jean Laurent.
At the age of fifty, due to the death of his wife, he began to suffer from mental disorders, although he continued to paint and was named a Professor of drawing at the Círculo de Bellas Artes. Later, the quality of his work began to suffer as he created rapidly produced bullfight scenes and other popular images to maintain his income.
He died in 1929.

On November 25 is the birthday of

Maurice Denis, French painter and writer born in 1870, and a member of the Symbolist and Les Nabis movements. His theories contributed to the foundations of cubism, fauvism, and abstract art.
The Denis family was affluent, and young Maurice attended both the École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Julian, where he studied with the French figure painter and theorist Jules Joseph Lefebvre.
At the Académie, he met painters and future Nabi members including Paul Sérusier, Pierre Bonnard; through Bonnard he also met the future Nabis Édouard Vuillard, Ker-Xavier Roussel and Hermann-Paul. In 1890, they formed The Nabis.
After Les Nabis, Denis went on to focus on religious subjects and murals.
The subjects of his mature works include landscapes and figure studies, particularly of mother and child. But his primary interest remained the painting of religious subjects, like "The dignity of labour", commissioned in 1931 by the International Federation of Christian Trade Unions to decorate the main staircase of the Centre William Rappard.
He died in 1943.

On November 26 is the birthday of

Peter Martensen, Danish artist born in 1953 in Odense.
He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Odense (1971-1977) and The Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen (1982-1984)
Nowadays he lives and works in Hellerup, Copenhagen.

On November 27 is the birthday of

(John) Thomas Baines, English artist and explorer of British colonial southern Africa and Australia, born in 1820.
Baines was apprenticed to a coach painter at an early age. When he was 22 he left England for South Africa aboard the "Olivia", and worked for a while in Cape Town as a scenic and portrait artist, and as official war artist during the so-called Eighth Frontier War for the British Army.
In 1855 Baines joined Augustus Gregory's 1855–1857 Royal Geographical Society sponsored expedition across northern Australia as official artist and storekeeper. The expedition's purpose was to explore the Victoria River district in the north-west and to evaluate the entire northern area of Australia in terms of its suitability for colonial settlement. His association with the North Australian Expedition was the highpoint of his career, and he was warmly commended for his contribution to it, to the extent that Mount Baines and the Baines River were named in his honour.
In 1858 Baines accompanied David Livingstone along the Zambezi, and was one of the first white men to view Victoria Falls. In 1869 Baines led one of the first gold prospecting expeditions to Mashonaland in what later became Rhodesia.
From 1861 to 1862 Baines and James Chapman undertook an expedition to South West Africa. Chapman's Travels in the Interior of South Africa (1868) and Baines' Explorations in South-West Africa (1864), provide a rare account of different perspectives on the same trip. This was the first expedition during which extensive use was made of both photography and painting, and in addition both men kept journals in which, amongst other things, they commented on their own and each other's practice.
He died in 1875.

Today, November 28, is the birthday of

Zbigniew Kupczynski, Polish-Canadian abstract expressionist artist born in 1928, known for his colorful portrait paintings of celebrities and children.
His work has been the subject of hundreds of exhibitions throughout Europe, North America, Australia and Japan since the 1950s.
Kupczynski moved to Wroclaw to receive formal training at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1946. In 1952, Kupczynski became a member of The Association of Polish Artists, but the country's socialist realism policy barred his work from exhibition due to his tendencies towards expressionism and semi-abstract art.
A change in Poland's government in the mid 1950s precipitated new trends in abstract expressionism and rising interest in Kupczynski's work. In 1956, French artist Andre Pignon visited Kupczynski in Warsaw and was appalled by the living and working conditions. Pignon's intervention resulted in the Ministry of Arts and Culture in Poland allocating a studio to Kupczynski.
By the late 1950s, Kupczynski had attracted the attention of both Polish and Western critics, and he was featured in various publications.
Today, Kupczynski's works are held in private and corporate collections worldwide.

On November 29 is the birthday of

James Rosenquist, American artist born in 1933, one of the protagonists in the pop-art movement.
From 1957 to 1960, he earned his living as a billboard painter. This was perfect training, as it turned out, for an artist about to explode onto the pop art scene. Rosenquist deftly applied sign-painting techniques to the large-scale paintings he began creating in 1960. Like other pop artists, Rosenquist adapted the visual language of advertising and pop culture (often funny, vulgar, and outrageous) to the context of fine art. Rosenquist achieved international acclaim in 1965 with the room-scale painting F-111.
His specialty is taking fragmented, oddly images and combining, overlapping, and putting them on canvases to create visual stories. This can leave some viewers breathless yet others confused, making them consider even the most familiar objects (a U-Haul trailer, or a box of Oxydol detergent, etc.) in more abstract and provocative ways.

* James Rosenquist died on March 31th, 2017

On November 30 is the birthday of

Juan Garcia Comba, Spanish photographer, painter, cartoonist and illustrator born in 1852.
He trained at the "Naval School of San Carlos de la Isla de León", then NCO School of the Navy. Later he entered the School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving, under the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, as a disciple of Eduardo Rosales. He brought him into contact with Abelardo Carlos, director of the Spanish and American Illustration, where Comba published his illustrations from March 1872 until 1907. During this period he also collaborated in the magazine Black and White.
He accompanied the King Alfonso XII to all trips made by Spain and Central Europe, so the Royal House honored him with honors and official positions. His 683 graphical information, of which only 15 are photographs, and his paintings, are testimony to the transformations that occurred in Spain in that period, earning the epithet "Graphic Chronicler of the Restoration."
He died in 1924.
