On September 13 is the birthday of

Kevin Teare, American artist born in 1951.
He is a 2006 recipient of a Joan Mitchell Fellowship Award for painting. His first exhibition was at The Indianapolis Museum of Art in 1975. At the age of 25 he was awarded a National Endowment Fellowship for Painting. Since then he has exhibited in museums and galleries internationally.
He attended Culver Military Academy, Ball State University, Indiana University and Bard College.
Though a visual artist first and foremost, Teare has participated in several musical projects and curator in several exhibitions.

On September 14 is the birthday of

Richard Gerstl, Austrian painter and draughtsman born in 1883, known for his expressive psychologically insightful portraits, his lack of critical acclaim during his lifetime, and his affair with the wife of Arnold Schoenberg which led to his suicide in 1908.
Early in his life, Gerstl decided to become an artist, much to the dismay of his father. After performing poorly in school and being forced to leave the famed Piaristengymnasium in Vienna as a result of "disciplinary difficulties," his financially stable parents provided him with private tutors. In 1898, at the age of fifteen, Gerstl was accepted into the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna where he studied under the notoriously opinionated and difficult Christian Griepenkerl. Gerstl began to reject the style of the Vienna Secession and what he felt was pretentious art.
Frustrated with the lack of acceptance of his non-secessionist painting style, Gerstl continued to paint without any formal guidance for two years. For the summers of 1900 and 1901, Gerstl studied under the guidance of Simon Hollósy in Nagybánya. Inspired by the more liberal leanings of Heinrich Lefler, Gerstl once again attempted formal education. Unfortunately, his refusal to participate in a procession in honor of Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria further ostracized him and led to his departure. Gerstl felt that taking part in such an event was "unworthy of an artist." His final exit from Lefler's studio took place in 1908.

On September 15 is the birthday of

Lubertus Jacobus Swaanswijk "Lucebert", Dutch artist born in 1924 who first became known as the poet of the COBRA movement.
He entered the Institute for Arts and Crafts in 1938 and took part in the first exhibition of the COBRA group at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam in 1949.
Lucebert's talent was discovered when he started working for his father after school. After half a year of art school, he chose to be homeless between 1938 and 1947. In 1947, a Franciscan convent offered him a roof over his head, in exchange for a huge mural painting. Because the nuns could not appreciate his work, they had it entirely painted over with white paint.
He belonged to the Dutch literary movement of De Vijftigers, which was greatly influenced by the European avant-garde movement COBRA. Lucebert's early work especially shows this influence, and his art in general reflects a rather pessimistic outlook on life.
His strong personality appealed to many. As a poet he laid foundation for revolutionary innovation in Dutch poetry.
He died in 1994.

On September 16 is the birthday of

Federico Silva, Mexican sculptor, painter and academic born in 1923.
He is self-taught in fine arts. He was an assistant of David Alfaro Siqueiros when the painter worked on the murals of the Palace of Fine Arts. In 1950 he began to paint their own murals.
Among his works are Solar Fountain in Michoacan, Alux of Death in the the Three Cultures Square, Song for a Mineral God at the Palace of Mining, Watcher, a work dedicated to the satellite Morelos, Mathematical Space in the UNAM Faculty of Engineering, the mural Huites in Sinaloa, Bird C, Scree Snakes and several monuments located in Aguascalientes, Puebla and Tlaxcala. Some of his works are in Spain, USA, France, Sweden, Japan and Jamaica.
He is a full member of the Academy of Arts of Mexico, Sculpture Section, since 1991.

* Federico Silva died on November 30th, 2022

On September 17 is the birthday of

Maurice Achener, French illustrator, painter, and print maker born in 1881.
He studied at a fine arts school in Strausberg (l'école des arts décoratifs de Strasbourg). He pursued further studies at the Arts Academy in Munich. There, he was a student of Ludwig von Löfftz and of Peter Halm, who introduced him to etching.
In 1901 Émile Schneider and Georges Ritleng created a group of artists called the Alsatian Artist Society (in French: la Société des artistes alsaciens). This society counted among its members Maurice Achner, Daniel Schoen, Hansi, Alexandre Urbain, and N. Forsberg. Achner developed a friendship with André Engel, who was also from Mulhouse. His etchings were published in "la Revue alasacienne illustrée" (the Illustrated Alsatian Review), a periodical edited by Charles Spindler.
He also became friends with the etcher and sculptor Maurice Bastide du Lude, at a studio situated at the Château du Lude near Orléans where they both worked. He created several small prints of his etchings which are still owned by the descendents of Bastide du Lude.
Maurice Achener settled down in Paris in 1905. From 1907-1908, he worked with Jean-Paul Laurens.
Achner never stopped working and was highly recognized for his etching talents.

On September 18 is the birthday of

Christian Anton Goering, German naturalist, painter and graphic artist born in 1836 who spent several years in Venezuela.
He learned taxidermy from his father, who was a member of several ornithological societies. It was at a meeting of one of these societies that he met Christian Ludwig Brehm who helped him obtain a position at the Ornithological Museum of the University of Halle, where he worked under the direction of Hermann Burmeister. From 1856 to 1858, they travelled in South America and he decided to pursue his interests in natural history.
In 1879, a selection of his drawings was published in Die Gartenlaube then, after eighteen years of organizing his notes and drawings, they were published in 1893 as Von Tropische tieflande zum ewigen schnee (From Tropical Lowlands to Everlasting Snow).
Duke Ernst I of Saxe-Altenburg named him a Professor and awarded him the Saxe-Ernestine House Order. He was also a corresponding member of the Zoological Society of London.
He died in 1905.

Today, September 19, is the birthday of

Vicente López y Portaña, Spanish painter born in 1772, considered the best portrait painter of his time.
He began formally studying painting in Valencia at the age of thirteen, he was a disciple of father Antonio de Villanueva, a Franciscan monk, and he studied at the Academy of San Carlos in his native city.
Vicente López was a Neo-classicist painter but he retained certain traces of the Rococo style. He had the Neo-classical emphasis on masterly drawing, though with less rigidity. López is considered the best Spanish painter of his time, second only to Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes. One of his rivals was Agustín Esteve Marqués.
Lopez’s style is dominated by the influenced of Anton Raphael Mengs and the Academicism and he was unaffected by the romanticism popular at the end of his career. López had great skills at drawing and with the use of the brush, but he did not achieve the level of genius as Goya did. His best works are probably his drawing and small scale painting.
He died in 1850.
