Loretta Lux [Fotografía, Fotomanipulación]

Loretta Lux

"Autorretrato / Self Portrait", 2000

"No preguntes.

Tan real y perfecta.

Loretta Lux is a German artist born in Dresden, 1969. She trained as a painter at the Munich academy and began making photographs in 1999. In 2005 she won a prestigious Infinity Award in Art from the International Center of Photography in New York. The artist walks a fine line between painting and photography in her technique. Lux photographs her models in vintage clothing in a studio against a white backdrop divorced from any social setting. She then uses a computer to place them into surroundings she has photographed herself. The resulting composites are then subjected to a process of subtle modification via digital manipulation which can take several months. The influence of Old Masters painters such as Bronzino, Goya, Runge and Velasquez [check out at the end of this post] is most evident in the way Lux carefully structures her finished compositions.

"Isabella", 2001

"I never allow them to wear their own clothes. My work isn't about these children. You can recongnise them, but they are alienates from their real appearance."

"Yanan", 2004

The hidden strength of Lux’s work lies in its meticulous balance between fact and fiction, or – in other words – its amalgam of traditional photography with still more traditional painterly techniques. Lux’s background as a trained painter, who happens to dislike the smell and tactile sensation of oil on canvas but otherwise feels herself indebted to all the established formal techniques of the discipline, has led her to conduct new experiments in painting, which are in fact ‘only’ fictional photographic images generated by the artist’s imagination and constructed with the help of digital techniques. Loretta Lux started to produce her painterly photographs as recently as 1999. The first was a self-portrait. Since then, she has portrayed only children: children who appeal to her, frequently the offspring of friends. The images she produces are graceful and serene, but at the same time have something disquieting and disconcerting about them. Lux: “The pictures are not portraits in the traditional meaning of the word. I call them imaginary portraits. They are not really about the children that I photographed. I rather made them my own.” Loretta Lux’s trade secrets are an integral part of her photographs. Don’t ask. Just look."

As a child she had reproductions of  Velasquez’ Infantas in her room, but Runge’s The Hülsenbeck Children [check out at the end of this post] is also an image she knows well from when she was young. She learns from looking at other people’s work. For example, Francis Bacon taught her about vision on human nature, and Rothko about intensity and spirituality. The most recent photo exhibition that impressed her most profoundly was last year, when she saw Diane Arbus in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. So real and perfect.

Philipp Otto Runge was a Romantic German painter and draughtsman born in 1777. He made a late start to his career and died young, nonetheless he is considered among the best German Romantic painters.
As a sickly child he often missed school and at an early age learned the art of scissor-cut silhouettes from his mother, practised by him throughout his life.
In 1803, on a visit to Weimar, Runge unexpectedly met Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and the two formed a friendship based on their common interests in color and art.
In 1804 he married and moved with his wife to Hamburg. In 1805 Runge's correspondence with Goethe on the subject of his artistic work and color became more intensive. Returning to Hamburg in 1807, he and his brother Daniel formed a new company in which he remained active until the end of his life. In the same year he developed the concept of the color sphere. In 1808 he intensified his work on color, including making disk color mixture experiments.
Runge was of a mystical, deeply Christian turn of mind, and in his artistic work he tried to express notions of the harmony of the universe through symbolism of colour, form, and numbers.
He died in 1810.

Agnolo di Cosimo, Il Bronzino

"Retrato de Giovanni de Médici de niño / Portrait of Giovanni de Médici as a child"
Óleo sobre tabla / oil on wood, 58 × 45,4 cm., 1545

Óleo sobre tabla / oil on wood, 63 x 48 cm., c.1542.
Galleria degli Uffizi (Florencia, Italia / Florence, Italy)

Agnolo di Cosimo, usually known as Il Bronzino, or Agnolo Bronzino (mistaken attempts also have been made in the past to assert his name was Agnolo Tori and even Angelo (Agnolo) Allori), was an Italian Mannerist painter from Florence born in 1503. His sobriquet, Bronzino, in all probability refers to his relatively dark skin.
According to his contemporary Vasari, Bronzino was a pupil first of Raffaellino del Garbo, and then of Pontormo, to whom he was apprenticed at 14.
Bronzino first received Medici patronage in 1539, when he was one of the many artists chosen to execute the elaborate decorations for the wedding of Cosimo I de' Medici to Eleonora di Toledo, daughter of the Viceroy of Naples. It was not long before he became, and remained for most of his career, the official court painter of the Duke and his court.
Towards the end of his life, Bronzino took a prominent part in the activities of the Florentine Accademia delle Arti del Disegno, of which he was a founding member in 1563.
He died in 1572.

Mark Rothko

Mark Rothko (Марк Ро́тко), was an American painter born in Dvinks, the Russian Empire (today Daugavpils in Latvia) in 1903. He is generally identified as an Abstract Expressionist. With Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, he is one of the most famous postwar American artists.
Marcus started school in the United States in 1913, quickly accelerating from third to fifth grade, and completed the secondary level with honors at Lincoln High School in Portland, in June 1921 at the age of seventeen.
Rothko's work matured from representation and mythological subjects into rectangular fields of color and light, that later culminated in his final works for the Rothko Chapel. However, between the primitivist and playful urban scenes and aquarelles of the early period, and the late, transcendent fields of color, was a long period of transition, marked by two important events in Rothko's life: the onset of World War II and his reading of Friedrich Nietzsche.
He died in 1970.
