Eduardo Sarlós
(Budapest, Hungría / Hungary, 1938 - Montevideo, Uruguay, 1998)

Eduardo Sarlós fue un dramaturgo, arquitecto, pintor y farmacéutico uruguayo, de origen húngaro, nacido en Budapest en 1938.
Llegó a Montevideo en 1948 junto con su madre y una tía.
En 1971 se recibió de arquitecto y por un breve lapso fue docente en la Facultad respectiva, pero hacia 1979 su nombre se hizo familiar en los ambientes de la plástica, donde sus pinturas y dibujos realizados en la trastienda de la farmacia "El Ombú", que sustentaba las necesidades familiares, llamaron la atención por la fuerza de sus imágenes en las que ya estaban presentes las preocupaciones que, años más tarde, reaparecerían en su producción dramática: el miedo, las persecuciones, la vejez, la declinación física, la muerte.
Con estas obras consiguió algunos premios y participó en exposiciones dentro y fuera del país.
Profesionalmente se desempeñó como agente de viajes. Murió en 1998.

Eduardo Sarlós was an Uruguayan playwright, architect, painter and pharmaceutical of Hungarian origin, born in Budapest in 1938. 
He arrived in Montevideo in 1948 along with his mother and aunt. 
In 1971 he earned his degree in architecture, and for a short time he was teaching in the respective School, but by 1979 his name became familiar in the artistic circles, where his paintings and drawings he create in the back room of the pharmacy "El Ombu" that susteain the family needs, they called attention because the strength of their images in which the concerns that, years later, would reappear in his dramatic production were already present: fear, persecution, aging, physical decline, death. 
These works received awards and participated in exhibitions in and outside the country. 
Professionally, he worked as a travel agent. He died in 1998.

José Luis Zorrilla de San Martín
(Madrid, España / Spain, 1891 - Montevideo, Uruguay, 1875)

José Luis Zorrilla de San Martín fue un escultor y pintor uruguayo nacido en Madrid en 1891. Una de las figuras centrales de la escultura uruguaya, su impacto más significativo tuvo lugar gracias a los monumentos que creó en la ciudad capital Montevideo. Su estilo presenta elementos de estética barroca, incorporados a la escultura moderna.
Era el hijo del escritor Juan Zorrilla de San Martín, quien trabajó en la corte de Alfonso XIII como embajador del Uruguay. Durante tres años estuvo en París donde conoció a Carlos Federico Sáez, quien resultaría ser una fuerte influencia para sus intereses y estilo posterior. Se estableció en Montevideo en 1898. Sus primeros retratos al óleo datan de 1906 y muestran la gran influencia de Sáez. Estudió en el círculo de Bellas Artes con el pintor Vicente Puig, y más tarde recibió clases del escultor Philip Menini (1909).
Su obra se exhibió por primera vez entre 1911 y 1914. Murió en 1975.

José Luis Zorrilla de San Martín was a Uruguayan sculptor and painter born in Madrid in 1891. One of the pivotal sculptors from Uruguay, his most significant impact was through the monuments he created in the capital city of Montevideo. His style displayed elements of aesthetic baroque incorporated with modern sculpture.
He was the son of the writer Juan Zorrilla de San Martín, who served in the court of Alfonso XIII as Ambassador of Uruguay. For three years he moved to Paris, where he met Carlos Federico Sáez and would prove a strong influence in his interest and artistic style later. He settled in Montevideo in 1898. His first oil painting portraits dating from 1906 show a great influence from Sáez. He studied at the Círculo de Bellas Artes with painter Vicente Puig, and later received lessons from the sculptor Philip Menini (1909). Between 1911 and 1914, his work was first exhibited. He died in 1975.

Miguel Ángel Pareja Piñeiro
(Montevideo, Uruguay, 1908 - 1984)

Miguel Ángel Pareja fue un pintor uruguayo nacido en 1908 que vivió en la ciudad de Las Piedras. Empezó tomando clases de pintura en su adolescencia con Guillermo Laborde.
Viajó a Italia y Francia, y como muchos otros artistas uruguayos en esa época, fue influenciado por la estética y la perspectiva artística del continente europeo. 
En sus comienzos se dedicó a la pintura figurativa, pero en la década del 50 ya se adentraba en el terreno del arte abstracto, después de su paso por el planismo, difundido en Uruguay por el Círculo de Bellas Artes, donde estudiaba el artista. Esta modalidad se realizaba en base a planos de color no volumétricos, con dibujos con pocos detalles y colores vivos e intensos. 
Fue docente y director de la Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes. Abandonó la pintura para dedicarse a la serigrafía y dibujo, pero volvió a ella en la década del '70. 
Pareja, además de ser un buen profesional, se comprometió con la sociedad, realizando trabajos de sensibilización y difusión, tratando de integrar el arte a la cosa colectiva.
Falleció en Montevideo en 1984.

Miguel Angel Pareja was a Uruguayan painter born in 1908 who lived in the town of Las Piedras. He began taking painting classes in his teens with Guillermo Laborde.
He traveled to Italy and France, and like many other Uruguayan artists at the time, was influenced by the aesthetic and artistic perspective on the European continent.
In the beginning was dedicated to figurative painting, but in the 50s already deepen into the field of Abstract Art, after passing through the Planism, released in Uruguay for the Fine Arts Circle where the artist studied. This method is performed based on planes non volumetric of color, patterned with few details and rich, vivid colors.
He was a professor and director of the National School of Fine Arts. Gave up painting to devote himself to the serigraphy and drawing, but returned to it in the 70s.
Pareja, besides being a good professional, committed to society, doing awareness and dissemination works, trying to integrate art with the social collective issues.
He died in Montevideo in 1984.

Hugo Nantes
(San José de Mayo, Uruguay, 1933 - 2009)

Hugo Nantes fue un pintor, escultor y ceramista uruguayo nacido en 1933 en la ciudad de San José de Mayo donde residió y tenía su taller. 
Estudió en el Museo Departamental de dicha ciudad con los maestros Dumas Oroño y Edgardo Ribeiro; realizó curso de grabado en la Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes con el grabador Adolfo Pastor. En 1963 ganó la beca Anual de Jóvenes de la Comisión Nacional de Bellas Artes en usufructo de la cual viajó a Europa (Italia, España, Francia, Bélgica, Holanda y Portugal). Luego viajó a Bolivia, Perú, Chile, Argentina y Brasil, y en el año 1983 a Egipto y nuevamente Europa. Desarrolló tarea docente en el Museo Departamental e Instituto Normal de San José y en Enseñanza Secundaria.
Expuso individualmente en múltiples ocasiones y obtuvo numerosos premios en Salones del Interior y salones nacionales y municipales desde 1956. Murió en 2009.

Hugo Nantes was an uruguayan painter, sculptor and ceramist born in 1933 in the city of San José de Mayo where he lived and had his studio. 
He studied at the Departmental Museum of the same city with teachers Dumas Oroño and  Edgardo Ribeiro and engraving course at the National School of Fine Arts with Adolfo Pastor. In 1963 he won the annual award of the National Youth Commission of Fine Arts in usufruct which traveled to Europe (Italy, Spain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Portugal). He then traveled to Bolivia, Peru, Chile, Argentina and Brazil, and in 1983 again to Egypt and Europe. He developed teaching task in the Departmental Museum and San Jose Institute of Normal and Secondary Education. 
Individually exposed multiple times and won numerous awards in national and municipal halls since 1956. He died in 2009.

Alceu Ribeiro
(Artigas, Uruguay, 1919 - Palma de Mallorca, España / Spain, 2013)

Alceu Ribeiro fue un pintor, escultor y muralista uruguayo nacido en 1919 en el departamento de Artigas.
En 1939, gracias a una beca, él y su hermano Edgardo se trasladan a Montevideo y comienzan sus estudios con el Maestro Joaquín Torres García. Con él Alceu adquiere oficio, concepto y cultura teórica. Los estudios en el Taller Torres García se prolongan hasta 1949.
En 1974 se instaló definitivamente en Mallorca sin perder contacto con Uruguay.
En 2002 su mural en mosaico para el Sindicato Médico en Montevideo es declarado Monumento Histórico Nacional. En 2007 fue nombrado Ciudadano Ilustre de Montevideo. Murió en 2013.

Alceu Ribeiro was an Uruguayan painter, sculptor and muralist born in 1919 in the department of Artigas. 
In 1939 thanks to a grant he and his brother Edgardo move to Montevideo and begin his studies with the Master Joaquín Torres García, with him Alceu acquires craft concept and theoretical culture. Studies in the Torres García Workshop until 1949. 
In 1974 he settled in Mallorca without losing contact with Uruguay. 
In 2002 his mosaic mural in Montevideo for the Sindicato Médico was declared a National Historic Monument. In 2007 he was appointed honorary citizen of Montevideo. He died in 2013.

Eduardo Amézaga
(Montevideo, Uruguay, 1911 - 1977)

Pintor uruguayo de origen vasco, nacido en Montevideo en 1911.
Estudió en el Círculo de Bellas Artes y en la Escuela Industrial. Su obra se caracterizó por su predilección por los paisajes rurales, costeros y rincones urbanos. Representó además sucesos históricos del Uruguay, tales como La declaratoria de Florida, La Reforma Escolar de José Pedro Varela y Sesión de la Sala de Representantes de la Provincia Oriental. En 1947 obtuvo el Gran Premio del Salón Nacional con uno de sus autorretratos. Falleció en su ciudad natal en 1977. Una calle del barrio montevideano Cerrito de la Victoria lleva su nombre.

Eduardo Amézaga was an Uruguayan painter of Basque origin, born in Montevideo in 1911. 
He studied at the Circulo de Bellas Artes and the Escuela Industrial. His work was characterized by his predilection for rural and coastal landscapes and urban corners. He also represented Uruguay historical events, such as The Declaration of Florida, The School Reform by José Pedro Varela and the Session and the House of Representatives of the Eastern Province. In 1947 he won the Grand Prize of the National Hall with one of his self-portraits. He died in his hometown in 1977. A street in Cerrito de la Victoria neighborhood, in Montevideo, was named after him.
