Ahmed Pervez

Syed Wasi Hardi
"Ahmed Pervez", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 30" x 48"

Ahmed Parvez is one of the great self taught artists of Pakistan. He transferred his restless energy on the canvas with a burst of colour and exploding forms. His early figurative art turned abstract during the decade he spent in England from 1955 to 1964. There he became inspired by Alan Davie but developed his own distinct style. His exhibitions were well received in London. Ahmed Parvez influenced the Karachi art scene in the 1970s both with his personality and art. An uncompromising professional, he was a spiritual mentor to the younger generation and a fierce critic of his peers. His volatile, impatient nature brought him tragedy in personal life, which drove him to ill health and an early death. Ahmed Parvez continued to paint till the end and has left behind a large body of work. In 1978, a year before his death, he was recognized as one of the country’s outstanding artists and awarded the Pride of Performance.

Here you have a video with a conversation between the artist and Glenn Lowry, art historian, Director of MoMA . The presentation text in Youtube says:
"Shahzia Sikanders work takes apart the conventional methods of addressing traditional miniature paintings and reassembles them to expand their associations, inserting new dialogues often subversive in nature. Using wit, irony and paradox, Sikanders inventiveness draws upon literary, pop, media and art historical contexts. Her work ranges from intimate watercolors, large scale wall installations and digital animation and video."

Babar Azeemi

Babar has been painting for the past two decades out of inclination. Soil of Sindh is not only fertile for Sufis but intellectuals of varied fields. Its oppressive social structure and trying conditions for survival kindle the fire of creativity in its sons and daughters. An unending list of writers, poets, singers, musicians, sculptors, painters, actors, and revolutionary thinkers emerge from the interior of Sindh and make their mark not only in their own surroundings but also leave unforgettable impression on the intellectual scene of other cities when they exhibit their performance there. Admirable is the passion they have for their creative expression. If they were provided with opportunities and facilities for the promotion of their intellectual ventures only then one would have been justified to judge their works on quality basis.

Babar’s interest in drawing and painting developed when he was in class three.  His class teacher found him good at drawing. He encouraged Babar and guided him to join the Art Studio of Ustad Ashiq, a local artist and calligrapher. Babar was fascinated by Aftab Zafar`s realistic work, which he found in diaries and calendars. He made copies of these images. For that matter, he copied any painting any drawing he came across. He was also inspired by Ustad Usman, a pioneer artist in charcoal drawings. The result was that he won first position in art exhibition held on Parent’s day at Darul Uloom High School, Tando Mohammad Khan and passed his Intermediate Grade Drawing Examination in first division. He secured first position in Calligraphy Competition organised by District Education Office, Hyderabad.  He was awarded Shield of Best Artist for his paintings on Pakistan Movement Series by Pakistan Lovers` Forum. He won second position in Sadequain Award 2002. He was awarded Best Artist Shield by Mohammad Khan Ghani- Bazm-e-Adab Tikhar, Hyderabad. There was hardly any painting competition in Tando Mohammad Khan where Babar did not stand first. Meanwhile he passed his Matriculation in 1995. After passing his intermediate in 1997, he opened his own art studio in 1998.
His first solo exhibition was held at Sorath Library Tando Mohammad Khan.
